Concept/Development Art

The Girl and the Sky

The story of the girl who makes friends with the personification of the daytime sky. She lives in a place similar to the Great Plains of America.

The Rain

The personification of the rain. He knows he is looking for something white and fluffy to rest on, but he doesn't know exactly what it is. When he takes off his hat, his hair becomes rain.

The Curious Cuttlefish
The Curious Cuttlefish is quite curious about everything, and is always getting into trouble because of it. He goes about the ocean, examining everything and trying to match his colors and patterns to what he sees. At one point, he swims into an ocean trench and sees phosphorescent fish, but eventually gets frightened and runs back into the brighter part of the ocean.

A Persephone Tale

A version of the myth of Persephone- a girl finds her way into the underworld/death's realm, and ends up having to stay there for some amount of time. In this tale, she is lured to the realm when she tries to pick up a purple-blue flower, but the wind blows it into a cave, and she follows. In the end of the tale, she takes the realm from Hades by force and becomes Queen of the Dead.

Flight

The tale of the adventures of a boy who lives on an airship. He has bright yellow hair and can do magic, and is willing to (and does) fight to protect his ship.

  1. The Girl and the Sky has a great use of color. It is an interesting idea to personify the daytime sky. The visual idea of this Dark girl’s world is brought to life by the colorful sky is very clear. Yet, your pictures and storyline don’t communicate what or how they interact.

The Rain (boy) concept is clever and imaginative! Like how he is sitting on the sheep because it is “white and fluffy.” Also, the idea of rain when he removes his hat is very creative. For me, the WHY is missing. If he is rain, doesn’t he know where he is supposed to sit so he can make it rain? Perhaps, showing him creating rain at the beginning, and then an event makes him forget—that would have him searching for something white and fluffy.

The Curious Cuttlefish idea is very cute. Yes, curiosity can get one into trouble, just never thought about it happening to a fish, but, why not?

The Persephone illustrations give GREAT mood. Although quite complex for the time we are given, it would be interesting to see how this young girl, who is lured into Hades’ realm, becomes his successor.

Flight is also very imaginative. The boy’s wild hair and mischievous eyes add a lot of character. The drawings of him (especially kneeling) are very compelling. It will be interesting to know more as to who or what must be fought to “protect the ship.” Does he travel the universe or just his own world in his airship?

All are fun ideas. Looking forward to seeing what you’ll do with them.
